As you know, on the 12th January a violent earthquake occurred in Haiti. In addition to the human casualties – that may have reached thousands of victims – the disaster turned into a large scale humanitarian emergency situation.
The ITUC and the TUCA express its condolences to the people of Haiti and the trade unionists that have died, such as Ms Denise, CTH´s Chief of Finances.
We understand that a large number of trade unionists are sheltered at INAFOS, the education centre of CTH, together with several people seeking refuge. Their necessities are enormous ranging from water, food, clothes and medicines. CTH´s central office has also been damaged by the earthquake.
TUCA and the ITUC decided to push trough a solidarity initiative to help our brothers and sisters in Haiti. Donations can be made to the following bank account:
No. 375-1008200-61
Initially, ITUC will focus on the emergency assistance, with the support of its affiliates in the Dominican Republic (CASC, CNUS, CNTD) which are united and mobilised since the first hours after the earthquake. The Dominican trade unions are sending convoys to Haiti and have opened its local offices to receive donations such as food, clothes and other resources. The convoys are due to cross into Haiti during the next hours. Once communications are re-established, the needs in the country will be re-evaluated in order to continue the solidarity actions. We will keep all of you informed. |
